Diagnosis of liver fibrosis
The combination blood test + ultrasonographic elastometry improves the diagnostic performance of liver fibrosis and decreases the requirement in liver biopsy.
Thus, the combination Fibroscan and FibroMeter is the most performant: it significantly increases the diagnostic accuracy and even the predictive values. (J Boursier et al., P 180) See the presentation Quantitative evaluation of fibrosis progression in chronic liver diseases. The progression rate of liver fibrosis was similar between viral and alcoholic chronic liver diseases when the beginning of the disease was taken into account. This progression rate was predicted by blood test with a good accuracy. (P Calès et al., P 737) See the presentation Diagnosis of liver steatosis
Histological and non-invasive quantification of liver steatosis.
It is now possible to precisely measure liver steatosis thanks to a fully automated, objective and very reproducible method though the area of steatosis. This area of steatosis can be accurately predicted by a new MRI sequence or blood variables or both. (E. Cesbron, J Boursier et al.,P 697 & 983) Practical aspects
